Frequently Asked Questions
What is AI crawlability?
AI crawlability refers to whether your website can be crawled by AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, etc.). These bots collect content for AI search engines and large language models. Settings in your robots.txt file control access for these bots.
Why shouldn't I block AI bots?
AI search engines (ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overview) are reaching more users every day. Blocking these bots can prevent your site from appearing in AI-powered search results, reducing your potential traffic.
Which AI bots are checked?
16 different AI bots are checked: GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI), Google-Extended, GoogleOther (Google), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot (Perplexity), Applebot-Extended (Apple), CCBot (Common Crawl), cohere-ai (Cohere), Bytespider (ByteDance), Amazonbot (Amazon), FacebookBot (Meta), Diffbot, Omgilibot (Webz.ai) and Timpibot (Timpi).
What is llms.txt and why does it matter?
llms.txt is a file that introduces your website to AI crawlers. Similar to robots.txt, it's placed in your site's root directory. It helps AI bots better understand your site's content, structure and purpose. This file can help you be better represented in AI search results.
Why do bot challenges (Cloudflare etc.) cause problems?
CDN and WAF services (Cloudflare, Sucuri, etc.) can show challenge pages to block bot traffic. These pages can also prevent legitimate AI bots from accessing your site. It's recommended to whitelist known AI bot User-Agents in your CDN settings.
