TRAFFIC RECOVERY GUIDE

My traffic is dropping! Find out why — and win it back.

Organic traffic never drops for a single reason. Pages losing rank, content stuck on page two, articles competing for the same keyword and technical issues all pull it down together. With Semust you first see exactly which pages are losing, then fix them, then prove the result with before-and-after data.

Meet Semust, trusted by 12.000+ brands.

Why does traffic drop?

There are four common causes, and each one needs a different fix. First you need to know which one you're dealing with.

Lost rankings

Content that used to sit on page one has slipped back, and your clicks went with it.

Indexing problems

The page didn't lose its ranking — it fell out of Google's index, so it doesn't show at all.

Keyword cannibalization

Several of your pages compete for the same keyword, and Google can't tell which one to favour.

Technical issues

Broken links, bad redirects and a messy heading structure quietly drag the page down.

1Step 1

Diagnose the drop with your Search Console data

Start by pinpointing where the loss is coming from. Connect your Search Console account to Semust and use the declining-content chart in Search Console Plus to list the pages losing the most clicks. But some pages lose traffic not because of ranking, but because they dropped out of Google's index. The Semust Index Monitor checks the index status of every URL and shows Google's own stated reason for pages that aren't indexed. That tells you whether the drop is a ranking problem or an indexing one.

2Step 2

Win quickly with content stuck on page two

You don't only have to rescue the pages that lost rank — some pages are one small edit away from climbing. The Traffic Opportunity Keywords report in the Report Generator finds content stuck between positions 10 and 30. These are articles Google already likes, waiting on a minor improvement to reach page one. Give them priority when you start updating and you'll see a visible traffic lift quickly.

3Step 3

Put your falling keywords under live rank tracking

Search Console data arrives a few days late, so you can't see the effect of an update straight away. Add the keywords that are falling — and the ones with potential — to Semust Rank Tracking. Semust checks their position every day, so you can follow how rankings move day by day on a single screen. Start tracking before you make the update and you'll have a baseline to compare against afterwards.

4Step 4

Stop your own pages from competing

When several of your pages chase the same keyword, Google can't tell which one to promote and both rankings weaken. This is called keyword cannibalization, and left unnoticed it steadily pulls your traffic down. The Keyword Cannibalization report in the Report Generator surfaces the page pairs splitting their own traffic. Merge them into a single piece and concentrate your authority on one target.

5Step 5

Enrich the content with real user questions

Tool usedKeyword Tool

The fastest way to deepen a piece of content is to answer the questions people are actually asking. Search your keyword in the Semust Keyword Tool; the People Also Ask section collects the most current questions being asked on Google about that topic. The list refreshes daily, so it reflects what your audience cares about right now. Add those questions and their answers to the end of your article as an FAQ — the content gets broader and matches search intent more closely.

6Step 6

Reverse-engineer your competitors' structure

Seeing what the competitors who took your ranking do differently exposes your own gaps. Enter the falling keyword into the SERP Analysis Tool and pull the top-ranking pages' heading hierarchy, internal link structure and user questions onto one screen. Work out which subtopics they cover and which ones you skipped. Those are exactly the gaps to close when you rewrite.

Rewrite and re-optimize with AI

You've identified the competitor gaps and the user questions; now the content needs to be rebuilt around them. Semust AI Content Generation is fed by your SERP and competitor analysis data, and places your chosen keywords into the text naturally. You can watch keyword density live as it writes, so the article lands on search intent. Then polish the output directly in the Semust editor.

8Step 8

Close the loop on technical health and internal linking

Now it's time to support the page you just updated. The AI Internal Linking Tool scans all of your content, suggests sensible links to this article from semantically related pages, and picks the right anchor text. Links you approve can be applied to the page in one click through the optional WordPress integration. Finally, crawl the page with the On-Site SEO Tool to confirm there are no broken links, bad HTTP statuses or heading-structure problems left.

9Step 9

Prove the impact with data

Tool usedSEO Test

You added the questions, updated the pages with potential, wired up the internal links — but did the traffic come back? Enter the date of your change into the Semust SEO Test tool; it compares the period before and after on a chart and shows how clicks, impressions, average position and click-through rate moved. Prove with data that the drop has stopped and the rankings are climbing.
